You are looking at IBM through DELL colored glasses - Gerstner was not at all negative on the markets that IBM and DELL have in common, just the opposite.

Gerstner has shown himself to be a master at setting expectations and playing the long game.

What is his deal, really? What is his purpose?
Position IBM so that whatever they end up doing is perceived in the best possible light. Especially when that perception is tied to overall industry expectations going forward. "Sell what you got"...
