rude ... seems like these companies have cyclical success. DELL and IBM may be beginning a down cycle as GTW and Apple seem to be holding up okay. Could it be time for CPQ to begin to emerge as a unique boxmaker/service/telecom hybrid winner? I share victor's thoughts. We'll soon know. El

"" IBM saying that hardware sales 'abruptly deteriorated'
SOMEBODY bought all that software that MSFT sold. Wasn't HP. Wasn't IBM. Apparently, wasn't DELL. Not too many candidates left... ""

... And it wasn't Apple and it wasn't the white box guys because they're being squeezed by the dram allocations ...........so knowing this thread so well I guess I'm just going to have to say its.......................

Rude--- I purposely left my laptop at home for this overnight trip. I did not wish to check in the office except my phone messages. I checked into a Holiday Inn in NJ this afternoon. There is this wood wall cabinet and inside a NOKIA 17" flat screen and a CPQ mouse & keyboard. I have not seen what is being used as a server or ??? locked in the lower cabinet or in another part of the building. This is a pilot project by a company called PC ROOMLINK. The service is free,, figure that out or it is just a pilot test so no fees YET! When I get home I will call the company and see what else I can find out,,, Turn on the screen, take the mouse out of its holder hit 'search'and YAHOO shows up,,, very nice! Soon to have all MSFT OFFICE apps available... sure would help me stay in Holiday Inns instead of others I prefer and I may have bought my last laptop...

IBM also stated that their Intel based sales were strong, so the weakness was on the proprietary high end. Makes Y2K sense... Guess that could still affect CPQ due to Tandem, but who knows. Here is the verbiage...

Personal computer revenues increased, with
particularly strong growth in the Netfinity server line. Microelectronics revenues also
increased,
while
RS/6000 revenues declined slightly. The Y2K issue adversely affected AS/400 revenues to a
significant
degree and System/390 revenues -- which faced a difficult year-over-year comparison -- also
fell
due to the
Y2K slowdown and ongoing price reductions. Storage revenues were flat and networking
hardware
revenues declined significantly from the same period of last year.
