Actually, he was the governor of California for two terms. One student was killed in a different confrontation over a parcel of property the University owned in the city. Squatters were trying to take it over, and were confronted, not by Guardsmen, but by sheriff's deputies. The fellow who was killed had been throwing sharp- edged sheets of tin on the officers, among a crowd of people on the rooftops....It was, at least arguably, self- defense....

>>I had not realized that he was California's Governor for one term.

Good. Reagan was easily elected and served two terms, from 1967 to 1975. He could have won again or become Senator but the Presidency loomed because Ford was such a feckless failure (WIN etc).
