mightnt you want to sell puts to be able to profit from the up in the stock you expect (else why would you hold it?) or be happy to own more of the stock?

Almost right. Selling the put implies that you would be happy to take the stock at the strike, which implies confidence in future stock price. But it is a less bullish move than actually buying the underlying - if the stock actually does go up, all you get is the option premium.
