Jim - Re:<From what I hear the Coppermine .18u won't ever get much past 800MHZ which means that in this early stage of .18u maturity that 733 is pushing it...>

Tench - Re:<Then its obvious that our two sources are telling us two very different stories.>

It appears that Intel will release Coppermine at 1.6V (not 1.5V) for 20A gate oxide. They seem to be pushing right up to the reliability limit although I'm sure their model supports it. Based on this new information, I would predict
Coppermine to reach at least 850MHz. If they made ANY device improvements since they last reported (Dec 98 IEDM) they will reach 900MHz. We should see at this year's Dec IEDM. In my experience, the Fmax responds near linearly to drive current. So, a device design optimization which increases drive current 5% at the same channel length will increase Fmax by about 5% as well. This level of optimization is entirely possible. So, 900MHz looks very probable.

Re: Do you know this first hand? [Coppermine bin splits]

JC quotes Daiki as having been told that bin splits are good, but yields are bad.

Hey, I hadn't really been paying attention, but have you noticed that there are no Coppermines being sold on the grey market yet? I mean, Katamai was being sold rather openly weeks before official release, though the 'B' version recently introduced seemed to be in hiding when it came out. I just noticed that Daiki seems to have heard word that Coppermine will be available in lower volumes that most expect, and that this will be the case throughout the year (this actually does go in line with some of the high binsplit / low yields rumour I heard a while back).
