Zyrtec is what I took and it worked well for me without feeling any effects, except to feel better.

I had just turned 22-- and the use of radioactive iodine was a brand new treatment. Not only that I had no symptoms--- he said my thyroid was making me cough- which was bullshit. I coughed afterwards and have coughed all my life- I have allergies and asthma.
It was at the Med College of Va. and I believe that I was an experiment. Years later I tried to get my records and the hospital never answered my requests. I have since been told that to do such a radical treatment on someone of my age was extremely questionable and that it could have ruined my chances of having children.
I get furious when I think about it, although thank God, I have two fine boys and am very healthy- so I don't think about it often. I do think we are at the mercy of ambitious doctors and at 22 I was in no position to understand what was going on. My father was dying of cancer, and my mother had her hands full at home. So I was on my own.

I am very glad that yours turned out all right--- and of course taking synthroid is no big deal-- although I wouldn't want to see the bottom line of what I've spent on Synthroid for 28 years.

Re sudafed and thyroid:

I take sudafed (no antihistamine) w/o any hyper reaction, just fyi. I don't take it often, though, mainly just if I have a cold.

And about four or five years ago, synthroid for hypothyroidism was prescribed (runs in family; my mother was one of four sister who were hypothyroid) and I felt it didn't do much for me. Then a friend told me that her internist had found that his patients do better on a product, also a prescription med, called Armour Thyroid. So I asked for my next rx to be that, and have taken it for over two years now, and I feel great on it. Which I didn't on synthroid. My internist at first said that because it was a natural product instead of a synthetic, he didn't feel as confident that the tablets would be precisely consistent. But it works much better for me and now he prescribes it for other patients.

The dose of Armour Thyroid I take is 120 mg a day.

The dose of Synthroid I was taking was 0.1 mg a day.

So those are equivalents.

You and penni might consider giving it a try. For me, the difference was clear, and I believe it was not a placebo effect, because the improvement has lasted for two and a half years.

The Armour product wouldn't be good for vegetarians.
