JCJ RE: It's my understanding that these (Beowolf) are not typically solutions that compete with Sun.

Thanks. I continue to hear of more special projects in academia using clusters for specific problems.

Actually, Sun will be coming into the Super Computing world with StarCat (the follow on to the E10K). The StarCat architecture will leave all SBUS architecture in the dust with a complete PCI backplane. With the right file system this thing will smoke past the SGI O2K MIPS.
Now what do I do about the Jan 95 calls I am sitting right now?

When SGI bought Cray they sold what would eventually become the E10K to Sun because they didnt have a need for a large Cray machine based on SPARC processors that wasnt selling well, mostly due to Cray not having any experience in selling in commercial markets.

From what I understand it was a great deal monetarily and heck the stock has performed pretty well since.
