Pepsi Foods to farm Basmati Rice in India.

AS part of a strategy to aggressively expand its agro-exports portfolio, food & beverages multinational, Pepsi Foods, has decided to begin large-scale contract-farming of basmati, making it the first MNC in India to do so. The company has targeted 500,000 acres in the first year.Pepsi has also launched a new brand of packaged basmati abroad. Called Lehar Basmati, it will cater to the lower end of the retail segment. Pepsi already has a premium brand, Seasons Harvest, which is popular in the Middle East. (ET 11/26/99)
