john, Probably Tenchusatsu or Kash or Dan can answer that. I'm totally in the dark. (Although your speculation about cutting a trace sounds plausible -- similar to the way Intel disables SMP in Celerons but it's hackable). wily Can anyone explain the difference between a PIII XEON 733 @ $ 826 and a PIII 733 @ $776. There is no difference in specs explained in press release and I am very interested to see icomp numbers from Intel. Intel has always charged an arm and a leg for any added performance. For example, PIII 667 is $ 605 or difference of $171. Difference between PIII and PIII XEON is $ 50. I can't believe that Intel is only charging $50 if it is much faster. The only thing I can see is that Xeon supports 4 and 8 way scalability. I am sure we will see some hacker web site document how you can cut a trace and use ordinary PIII in 8 way server.

Xeon can go into 4-way multiprocessing systems, but I don't know of any system with a 4-way 133 MHz FSB. Right now, it's just 100 MHz for a 4-way FSB. Later on, the new Xeons should have larger on-die caches, from 512K to a whopping 2M! Those are the "Cascades" processors, and they should be entering the market in 1H 2000. Tenchusatsu
