Mani, re: <The cost of thermal solution can be as high as $20 or even more. This is HUGE. Also there is more extra cost associated with installation which is yet to be determined.>

Why does it cost so much? Installation - I can see how it's going to be difficult, but can you please, elaborate on this?

I found this article on Hitachi - DRAM business Unit's General Manger Masayoshi Ito Interview done by Electronic News:

Hitachi's DRAM Dream: Return to No. 1http://www.electronicnews.com/enews/Issue/FreeIssues/1999/10251999/1025hita01.asp ______
General manager Ito sets his sights on DRAM dominance
[Excerpted - only the questions pertinent to DDR and RAMBUS are shown here ]

EN: How are you implementing your strategy to address the high-end of the DRAM market?

Ito: We have two ways. First, I think we have good submicron technology. We are now ready to announce big customer sales of 256Mbit DRAM and 64Mbit DRAM. By using this technology, we'd like to appeal to the server market and the high-end workstation market.

And the other thing, as you know, is Rambus and DDR. By using our submicron technology, we are ready to announce both types of parts. We already announced a 256Mbit DDR DRAM and we're going to start mass production if there is demand from our customers. But, in the case of Rambus, we are thinking now what should we do. In the case of DDR we have a direction already.

EN: Hitachi was never bullish on Rambus DRAM. Now your views seem to have been validated. Why don't you think Rambus will ever take off?

Ito: We have to be prepared for all devices. It is up to the market to decide. From the first, we were very skeptical of Rambus' future. We decided to concentrate on synchronous DRAM. It is fortunate and lucky, too. However, we are ready to produce all parts.
