Well, my suggestion that the offenses against the TOU be listed in order of heinouosness (from felony to misdemeanor, etc.) was tongue-in-cheek. But spokesmen for SI Administration themselves have admitted, most recently in the Anthony Pacific case, that the TOU need to be spelled out a little. Personally, I don't think that the TOU, per se, are a form of censorship, in that anyone who comes onto SI agrees voluntarily to observe them. We are just talking about making it clearer to SI members just what it is they have committed themselves to observing.

I agree with jbe that the agreement to observe TOU is voluntary and I do think that they need to be clearer. There's another factor at work though that complicates things--namely, the tone of the thread itself. Some threads, such as Kosovo, are barroom brawls and you know it the moment you check it out. Some threads, such as last spring's Beltane, can be blatantly sexy. Many of the stock threads are deadly serious; some have a more lighthearted touch mixed in with stock discussion.

The Coffee Shop threads are all over the place, as you know. What might be read as harassing on one thread can be fair game on another. I can remember being laughingly chided on Another Good Reason Not To Be Married for possibly slipping into "political correctness" by phrasing something too delicately! Meanwhile, some of the stuff posted on the humor threads would have a person taken out and shot if posted elsewhere.

These are thorny issues, JLA.
