Speculation on this board has been that they will spin-off perhaps as much as 20% of the stock to the public, keeping the rest.

I would be surprised if current shareholders receive any stock in the offering, although it is possible that they will be offered shares at the offering price on some pro-rata basis. That in itself would be a pretty neat deal since a large premium over offering price is a virtual lock.

Does anyone know of a similar situation where stockholders of a company were offered an opportunity to participate in a spinoff of a part of a division?

my guess would be a partial spinoff. selling maybe 20% to the public. although, i sure wouldn't argue with a total spinoff with the option of current shareholders to participate. doubt that would happen, though.
