With Sony in Its Sights, Microsoft
Weighs Entry Into Game Machines

Thanks for posting. If true, this could be because Microsoft probably believes that CuMine will not be competitive by Fall 2000. This can be a great deal for AMD.

As we have discussed many times on this thread, Athlon architecture with its strong FP is great for a game platform.

Good news but weren't you the one that said AMD was going to hell in a hand basket (I guess you didn't put it quite like that) if it didn't announce the 750 this week. Under the circumstances, then, I am surprised that Msft is considering AMD, aren't you? Maybe you should call msft and set them straight ;~)

I don't think that would be good for AMD. High demand at low ASPs is not going to work.

<Athlon to be used in MSFT's GameBox>

I have a hard time believing that Microsoft's proposed GameBox is going to be successful against Sony and Nintendo's upcoming platforms. How the heck is MS going to get mainstream software developers like Square, Konami, and Capcom (the people with multi-million dollar budgets devoted to each game alone) to develop for them? As Sony already proved, it's the software, stupid, which is why Playstation I is doing very well against the N64, even though the N64 has superior hardware specs.

And I'd still feel the same way even if MS changes its mind and goes with Intel instead of AMD. Now, if Sony, Sega, or Nintendo decided on an Athlon or Pentium III for an upcoming product, that would be a different story. But MS? Yeah, I'm really looking forward to MS' flagship game, called "Microsoft Bob and the Blue Screen Of Death!"
