OK let me ask you a question then. If amazon doesn't dominate in etail, who do you think will? Or do you think nobody
will?

Liz,

I suspect no one will dominate. No has ever really dominated in the brick and mortal retail either. I need to explain this a bit.

Retail (the consumer) is a huge market. Far large than most imagine. There is enough business for large chains and independants to do well as long as they are innovative and hard working. One might say that Wal-Mart dominates retail. There was a time that Sears was "dominate." Also, Kmart had their time. None of these were really dominant but rather were dominant in segments. Walmart by far has the largest gross sales of any retailer but they are not even a player in the home furnishings market, automobile sales, etc. Currently Wal-mart is the largest seller of fine jewelry when fine jewelry is defined as as something with karat gold not plated. There are lots of jewelers out there with very large business selling finer diamonds and colored stones in various pieces. This is a market that Wal-mart is not in. They sell chain, some very promotional quality diamond rings, etc.

I used jewelry as one example but no retailer has ever really dominated retailing. There are for too many product categories to make this possible.

In ecommerce, I see The Gap as a decent player for clothes for the younger crowed. Younger than I<G> Etoys has a decent nitch in toys and I have no clue what Toys R Us will end up but not one will dominate the toy market. This is also true for every product out there. If there is money to be made, there will be competitors and good competitors.

Wal-mart sells more clothing than any retailer in absolute dollars. I do not know you personally but I suspect you do not buy your clothes at Wal-mart. They are not an option for you for your clothing. Someone else is an option. Someone that has the quality and styling you like. Does Wal-mart dominate in clothing? No! No one does.

Did I make any sense??
