Mickey:

Intel does not have a problem with manufacturing the Xeons or the 733 Cumines. The problem is in the 820 chipset. The 820 has both 133 bus and Rambus capability. The problem appears not to be a problem with the Rambus DRam.

The 840 chipset is all rambus. It is shipping now. Compaq superior experience with 8-way systems should allow it, should it choose to ship 8-way Xeons well before Dell.

Dell was betting very heavily on the 820 launch. And as closely as I listened I could not hear anything in the quarterly report or conference call which indicated CPQ was impacted by the delay in the 820s.

AMD's athlon I believe is presently being offered by CPQ at least as a stand alone system. Amd has had a bus problem, but it is more along the lines of getting mobo manufacturers to do what may be a "short run". AMD says they are planning on using the EV bus for multiprocessing the K7. The EV bus is a CPQ design.

There are others on this board who know a lot more than I regarding the technology. But, its seems that the heir apparent number one producer of RDRAM in this country will be Micron, which has just entered into a five year supply agreement with CPQ.
