Tench,

Re: They note that the Dell system with 128M RDRAM costs $2,802 versus the same Dell system with 128M SDRAM at $2,472 in September.

Just guess what kind of FUD they'll extract from this quote.

I know, but I wanted to get the good in with the bad.

I'm more interested in the PIII/RDRAM combination providing a 14% savings in time over the Athlon with SDRAM running multiple tasks in a multitasking enviroment (an environment in which most high-end users tend to operate -- think compiling a program in one window while writing more code in another and a debug session going on in a third, or a graphic artist applying complex filters to multiple images in multiple windows simultaneously, or, as I mentioned previously in my own case, scanning photos in one application while converting formats in another while working on large Powerpoint presentations and running my web queries in Excel to download stock quotes and running the Mersenne Prime and SETI applications in the background and I've missed a couple others). If the PIII/RDRAM systems take 6/7ths of the time to complete these tasks, then for me personally, the $300 dollar difference will pay for itself in about 12 hours of intensive multitasked operation (based on what I charge my clients per hour). In elapsed time, that's probably about a week or two. Seems worth it to me. If I think about it as an extra hour I can spend with the kids because everything finished faster, it's priceless.
