Digital Island Rises In Sympathy With Akamai

Thursday October 28 5:11 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Internet services company Digital Island Inc
(Nasdaq:ISLD - news) stock surged Thursday ahead of a much anticipated initial public
offering for Akamai Technologies Inc, which has raised the visibility of companies involved
in content distribution over the Internet.

Digital Island leaped $15.21 to $58.18, extending gains from a strong week that began
Monday with the acquisition of Sandpiper Networks Inc. in a stock deal valued at over $1
billion. Digital Island closed last Friday at $23.

Sandpiper's content distribution technology is similar to Akamai, which received favorable
views from analysts and investors during its pre-IPO road show. Investors who were unable
to get hold of the hot Akamai stock at the expected $21 to $23 IPO share price may have
been buying up Digital Island, analysts said.

''All of a sudden investors are waking up to the content distribution space,'' said Lehman
Brothers analyst Geoff Stricker. ''It's become a very hot topic right now. From what we
hear Akamai is going to be a very hot deal, and Digital Island is benefiting from that.''

The distribution of content is becoming increasingly important as large corporations move
their operations online and set up e-commerce businesses. Stricker said that Digital Island is
among a small number of companies who handle large scale distribution.

Also, it is well placed because it has data centers set up around the world to cater to global
companies. Its technology allows companies to distribute content evenly and with a high
degree of reliability to many points, using a private network linked to the Internet.
