McCaw Saves the Day

By Sylvia Carr
November 02, 1999

Get-Rich Tip: Find a sugar daddy. There's nothing like a generous, well-connected investor to bring a company back from bankruptcy. Monday, cellular network pioneer Craig McCaw came to the rescue of ailing satellite telephone company ICO Global Communications.

McCaw will lead a group of investors who are supplying ICO with a cool $1.2 billion over the next year and a half. His interest in troubled satellite companies doesn't end there; already a major investor in satellite network Teledesic, he may help out another satellite network, Iridium, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last August, just two weeks before ICO Global.
