Buoa Sera, Frank,

I might chime in from out here in the hinterlands, where I went up to elevation today to glimpse the first 12" of base for our local ski area. I noticed a couple things. Surprisingly, the AMPS service of U.S. Cellular totally left me without signal at the parking lot of the resort. I'm clueless, I would have thought that was a "must cover" area. Perhaps Cell One's claim that they have three omnis aim at Bachelor should have been a tip off as to which carrier I should have used. But, as with the Yankees, you pay a premium rate for the premium freight. So AMPS is intriguing me. [An aside: Sorry, ww and DT, I'm just your normal retail patzer, as far as cell services are concerned, stuck playing around with '80's technology. So this post is mostly observational and not too technical.] It was very attractive to try to judge when I could actually place a call coming down the hill. At one moment five pegs on the tower strength signal scale convinced me the world was right so I dialled, reached my party to discuss sturgeon fishing on the Columbia, they're running y'know, and just when we get to discussing the details...... (And here's where we drift back in this stream of consciousness exposition to the technologically astute observations of our favorite N'Yorker) Wham I am left repeating myself several times as is my pal on his POTS line, while we wait for some semblance of a signal to get transmitted. For a brief moment, I can lock on the tower and we resolve to say g'bye, just as I round a hill and the fade is complete.
LOS, alas, is close to LOL and leaves a lot to be desired. Would G* have solved the problem. My view, "In our collective dreams". And for 8x the money.

"Audible artifacts" Hmmm, that's worth thinking about. But is it worth recording........>>gg<<

Frank-I found myself also rooting for the Mets in the LCS after their incredible late run that got them there. I learned we were doomed in the 2nd game however when the best the TV announcers could say about the Mets best hitter (Olerud) was that he was the only Met who came to the games on the subway instead of a limousine. What is a good analogy here? The limo riders were like the AOL subsrcibers, paying a premium for a busy signal when they could have gone with the local ISP for 25% of the cost and certain delivery? Ah well, maybe next year. (For the Mets)

Best regards,

Mike
