I am a little confused about it myself. I think TAPI is COM based, and I think I have seen a reference about some port of COM / DCOM to Unix.

I agree that a single box / single OS based system is more elegant. Cisco CallManager is all NT based. Just for reference, here is a review of Cisco based system (which was acquired when they bought company called Selsius):

I think this is going to be a huge market. We will see who the winners will be. My bet is that Microsoft will enter it as well sooner or later on the software side.
