White Miracle Entertainment (formerly First Miracle Group) has signed Matthew Modine, Martin Landau, Louise Fletcher, Charles Durning and Ben Gazzara to star in "Very Mean Men," and made a three-year, 10-picture development deal with the black comedy's producers, David Dadon, Steven Baio and Neil P. White, it was announced today by Tony Cataldo, Miracle's chief executive officer. Principal photography began on the film on Oct. 23, 1999 in Los Angeles. "Very Mean Men," the first of the new alliance's films, will also star Burt Young and Jack McGee. It is the story of a bartender (Modine) who weaves an outrageous tale about two notorious crime families engaged in a bizarre turf war that erupts when a waitress is stiffed her tip. Tony Vitale, who made his directorial debut to critical acclaim with the independent hit comedy "Kiss Me Guido," will helm the film, from a script by L.A. playwright Paul T. Murray. "We couldn't ask for a more talented ensemble cast of veteran actors," said Cataldo, who will executive produce. "Add that to Vitale's skilled comedic touch, and we're guaranteed to produce a winner." Miracle's new development deal will involve films with $3- to $10-million budgets, said Cataldo, who will executive produce each one. Baio and White, who teamed up in 1996, have collectively produced and co-produced six feature films. Their action feature "The Hunted," is airing on DIRECTV and is being distributed internationally by Showcase Entertainment.
