People in both groups would have had no prior experience with Zicam, first of all, and should not have had any preconceived notions about what to feel. This study was done before the product was released and before the product even had a name. More importantly, the people in a double-blinded study simply have no idea which they are getting. The placebo contained everything except the zinc gluconate from what I could tell. Finally, the study will likely contain a comparison of "side effects", reactions (no, I do not know this for a fact, but most studies do) that should include what you mentioned. If those side effects are nil from both groups, there is no difference anyway. At this point, you are assuming it is the zinc, rather than the matrix, that is causing this sensation but you really have no way to be certain of that.

I do not see how this could honestly be an issue in a double-blinded study.
