I'm going to continue beating this CDMA launch in India into the ground since I think it may be much bigger news than earnings when we look back in a couple of years....a couple of thoughts.

MTNL is the state-owned phone company....From what I can gather it has a monopoly on wired telephone service. Up until a couple of months ago, the Indian government had decreed that GSM would be the wireless system of choice. They have since shifted this position to a technology neutral one. MTNL then introduced a mobile CDMA system in Delhi and Bombay (though the number of lines are still small). The private GSM operators seem to be protesting that the rates that MTNL are charging are too low....they believe that MTNL is subsidizing their wireless rates with revenues from their wired systems.

GSM still has a larger footprint than CDMA in India, but it is good to have the goliath on CDMA's side for once....In Japan, US, and China (NTT, ATT, China Telecom) all of the largest phone operators went with variations of TDMA. Hopefully MTNL will make a true committment to a nationwide CDMA rollout....

Congratulations to all....Hope everyone is celebrating today.
