The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that TLC The Laser Center
Inc.'s dismal stock market performance in the past four months is an
"industrywide issue," the company's chief executive officer told
shareholders at the annual meeting yesterday. "I'd like to tell you
something is wrong with our business, but our business is great," Elias
Vamvakas said. To illustrate the stock market performance of companies in
the laser vision correction (LVC) sector, one of the first slide's in TLC's
slide presentation was a chart showing stock prices of TLC, Laser Vision
Centers Inc. and Visix Inc., all trailing the S&P 500 index by a wide
margin. Nevertheless, investors peppered Mr. Vamvakas with questions about
discounting in LVC prices as well as the stock market drop in the face of
TLC's improving profit. "I can't explain it." Mr. Vamvakas told one
shareholder. "We see no correlation between our short-term stock price and
our [business] performance," he said. Moreover, he said the company has
beaten analysts' profit estimates in each of the past five quarters.
