Morning Rudy,..Re:.DELL is unlikely to do a "high end" Unix before the IBM Monterray project

Thanks very much Rudy. I'm trying to get a fix on just what this "high end" or Enterprise market comprises. And how are the servers measured that are designated for the high end. (If only it were so simple as torque or HP ratings).<g>

In the small bit of investigation I've done, mostly at the SUNW site, it's difficult to tell which type of server goes for which application. Intuitively, my guess would be that the high end/enterprise business interfaces and networks mainframes or what we use to refer to as minicomputers, and requires a high degree of redundancy for maximum reliability.

Also noticed that SUNW had Solaris or proprietary software for implementing these advanced operating functions. So when the talk on the Dell thread says that SUNW is a competitor, I wish to know in what market. There appears to be some misinformation about and it's difficult to keep a handle on investment risks when the picture isn't crystal clear. <g>

As an aside, I heard this morning at breakfast that Alpha is being phased out. That seems VERY unlikely to me, but have you heard anything to that effect?

Thanks again for clearing up the questions regarding "high end" server markets.

Cheers,

Lee

Dog,

So DELL's non existent high end
stategy is in disarray and DELL will be "regrouping".
CPQ good, DELL bad. <g>

By the way Solaris may well run on a PowerEdge 8500.
SUNW has been working on X86 versions of Solaris for about 8 years.

One way to get CPQ's stock to go up is to lie to the analysts.
