More on CDMA in India....

From what I can gather MTNL had a 10,000 line network set-up for Delhi. This network was launched on Oct. 2nd. It was being marketed as a "poor-man's wireless". There was literally a stampede when they opened the doors to begin accepting subscribers. One story was that people grabbed the forms for the subscriptions (which were limited) and later sold these forms to people who showed up later. All of the phones were sold out in two days.....MTNL is going to be looking at a contract to up the number of lines available to 50,000.

Now the bad news....It looks like CDMA will be marketed as the cheap (and less reliable) alternative to GSM. MTNL is still looking at starting a GSM network for the high-end of the market.

It is incredible how cheap the rates are....it looks like they are charging 3-4 cents for a 3 minute call (vs a peak rate by GSM operators of nearly 15 cents a minute).

Just a comment....I'm not exactly sure if all of the above is correct.
The Indian newspapers and press releases which I am reading are not the most accurate pieces of journalism. One kept referring to CDMA as WILL. I think I am getting the gist of the story though....

RE: HDR. I wonder if the data rates you noted are for mobile or fixed or both, since Dr. Jacobs made the distinction. Site does not say.

HDR and India (not a vindaloo or bhuna, separate questions):
slacker,

I think the key question is how many users would represent a "loaded sector". I think that 600kbps would be good enough for most wireless users.....

I would have but a <vbg> after that statement, given my dial-up speeds at home. But then I began thinking about it, with audio and video streaming eventually coming to wireless, where does 600kbps put the appliance in terms of reception quality, and of course the qdog concerns re. available spectrum.

Thus, good question, what is fully loaded.

On India, WHO is selling the phones there? Korean? And why should we mind how CDMA is being marketed in Calcutta? As long as the infrastructure coverage is adequate and lack of same does not give CDMA a bad name.

Best, Steve
