Peter, you ask a wonderfully insightful question... the fib spirals are indeed 3 dimentional.. we live in a 3 dimentional realm..... the problem that needed to be solved was how to translate a 3 dimentional spiral into a 2 dimentional chart... well, these charts are also 3 dimentional but we only recognize them as 2 dimentional because of the dimentional limitations of ink on paper... for example: you are 3 dimentional but a photo of you is only 2 dimentional... that translation can be done, but it takes some work.....
