BUT cars are like computers, you always need, or perceive you need the new gimmick advertised to make your computer / car run more efficient or increase performance.

Tread is very important to your car's driving safety in wet or snowy conditions. I would not wait until it was hydroplaning on moderately wet streets.

If it is dry- a slick tire actually offers better traction. They are quite dangerous to drive on in wet conditions.
