The info from RED_SLK is consistent with what I have learned in discussions I recently had with Globalstar USA personnel. They are confident the MOU numbers will meet or exceed expectations. They mentioned the users may surprise us. They expressed some frustration with the soft roll out but said it really was never projected to be anything else. The delays will not have any long-term affect on the business plan. They did say Iridium's mistakes really hurt the industry and frankly scared off some smaller retailers and sp's. To some extent, that is affecting the roll out. They assured me that mgmt HAS learned from Iridium and has made adjustments some of which are affecting timing. But again, they feel very strongly that the business plan will be met.

I asked how they felt about Mot's new super chip which will facilitate more compatibility amongst different standards and they said great. We will use the chip if and when it is actually available. (It is kind of interesting that Mot comes out with a chip that would be in direct competition to Iridium's bus plan to serve the travelling exec!)

They stressed that they are targeting high end users rather than large numbers of users. They feel confident that this approach will produce the needed MOU's.

I asked why the rank and file Airtouch emp doesn't know didly about the system and they said it was probably a mistake not making them more aware sooner but that is being remedied right. It was never their intent to train these folks until the system was ready. They said the scripts will be in everyone's hands by early January.

They said they were very confident that the roll out in No Am including Canada and the Carribean will go well.

They made an interesting point in implying that the production issues at Ercy might be due to their sensitivity to their GSM customers. Despite the settlement with Qcom, there are still many GSM proponents in Europe and G's CDMA protocal is creating some issues that have yet to be sorted out. Sorry, but I don't know the full details regarding what those issues are. They felt confident, however, that the issues will be resolved.

I came away from the discussion feeling very good. No one is dragging their feet intentionally and they seem very confident that the demand for the service is robust. It is apparent that bringing everything on line is a very complicated process and some of the roadblocks are outside of BS's or anyone's direct control and there are certainly some issues that were not anticipated.

I asked when we would start hearing more specifics. They said we would be hearing about user satisfaction within a few weeks and perhaps specifics on hand set absorption. Sorry Maurice, but I didn't get the impression that they would soon put the MOU graph on the web page but I hadn't read your post prior to my discussion. Maybe they have read it and might just do that sooner than later.

In short, I think we are going to love next spring.
