And several people have pointed out that Ovshinsky's history of big ideas dates from about then, also. (I can remember stocking up on canned foods during the Cuban missle crisis when I was a kid).

I wonder how big the market is for e-cams designed for capturing images of nuclear explosions? Assuming that the nuclear test ban treaty is ratified, all that's left will be the orbital satellite niche.
