Mmmmm ... got a very compelling bit of info which might explain the above paragraph. I have no link, but look at these juicy quotes (the original writer is named Jonathan Joseph, it's probably pertinent that I mention this):

"Demand for AMD's (AMD, 3H) Athlon processors remained firm last week. AMD is indicating to Taiwanese motherboard makers that the company will ship 1.1-1.2 million Athlon units, up from our current estimate of 800,000. In addition, speculation has Hewlett Packard announcing a line of PCs based on AMD processors, likely in the March quarter"
"Anecdote from several motherboard makers and PC OEMs last week suggests volume availability of the Pentium-III Coppermine will likely not to occur until late-November. This is the first introduction since the Pentium, that Intel has not had large volumes in inventory upon announcement of the new product"
