Military Affairs - TU-22 bombers, AWACS from Russia

NEW DELHI: The prospects of India getting on lease the A-50 airborne early warning and control system (AWACS) along with TU-22 strategic bombers from Russia have led to excitement among strategic affairs specialists and the Air Force. These are seen as major force multipliers which could place India in the big league.

Defence ministry officials sought to play down the signing of the Indo-Russian defence protocol on Friday. But there is speculation on whether the massive Russian offer, coupled with bilateral ``decisions' announced by deputy prime minister Ilya Klebanov, carry a proposal that India consider the purchase of the MiG-AT advanced jet trainer.

The IAF is learnt to have shortlisted the British Hawk-100 and the French Alpha. It requires about a hundred units of these, and a proposal is pending before the cabinet for outright purchase of two squadrons (40 units). IAF sources say the Russian trainer was not evaluated since it was not in the picture at that time. Only a couple of prototypes of the MiG- AT have been flown.......
