From the little I know, there used to be a lot of pollution in the rivers and the air from the steel mills. They've cleaned up both (no steel mills does wonders for the environment ;)) and diversified the economy. They've created new parks, such as at the confluence of the two major rivers.

It is still a working class town as I understand it, but probably less so than it once was. A snobby NY friend of mine who hails from there described it as a 'regional city,' as opposed to Seattle, which he describes as a 'national city,' or NY, which he characterizes as an 'international city.'
