Speed is not everything, and who will write, test, document and support software for free; only hackers who also have a real job, or are already financially independent. It is
arrogant to believe that you have the right of access to
another persons hard work and innovation !! If one chooses
to put work in the public domain, like Linux, thats fine.
But to remove patents would be ridiculous.

No, not the whole patent system, I only want to abolish software
patents. And that is because I believe they slow the economy and
software industry overall, instead of growing them.


While I agree that Software Patents are inherently evil, they are as much a part of law as anti-trust applying to the fast-moving technology sector. You have to live with the former just like I have to live with the latter.
