Lam Research Corporation Awarded Top Honor Under NEC's 1998 Outstanding Equipment Supplier Award Program
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 9, 1999--

For the second consecutive year, NEC has ranked Lam as the

number one supplier under its supplier award program.

In addition, NEC selected Lam's 4520XLE(TM) dielectric

etch system as ``Best New Equipment.'

Lam Research Corporation (Nasdaq: LRCX - news) today announced that NEC Electronics, Inc., of Roseville, Calif., has selected Lam as the number one supplier under its 1998 fiscal year Outstanding Equipment Supplier Award program for the second consecutive year. NEC has also selected Lam's 4520XLE dielectric etch system for ``Best New Equipment' under the same award program.

To select top suppliers, NEC ranked 35 fab equipment suppliers based on equipment performance, process quality and stability, engineering activities, service performance and value, spares price, service and quality, and customer communication. A team selected from NEC's Equipment Engineering, Process Engineering, Line Maintenance, Purchasing, and Spares Departments performed the supplier ratings in each area.

NEC selected the 4520XLE as Best New Equipment for its 1998 Fiscal Year program for providing excellent production performance at low cost. According to Peter McGrath, NEC's Staff Process Engineer, ``We needed a cost-effective strategy for upgrading our technology to 0.18 micron processing and below. We've been running up to 8:1 aspect ratio in production and are very pleased with the results. We are also very encouraged by the mean time between cleans (over 12,000 RF minutes without dry clean) and low cost of consumables. Support from Lam's technical staff was excellent with our first installation kit, taking just five working days. We have gained both the technology and cost benefits we desired.'

Flash card shipments for MP3 audio to hit 5.2 million in '99, says report

Semiconductor Business News
(11/10/99, 02:44:49 PM EDT)

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--Worldwide demand for flash-based memory cards used in MP3 digital audio applications is expected to reach 5.2 million units in 1999 with MP3 player shipments totaling 1.3 million systems this year, said to market researcher In-Stat here today.

In a new study of MP3 flash demand, In-Stat predicts that memory card shipments will reach 21 million in 2002. During that year, MP3 player shipments will grow to about 8.5 million units worldwide, according to In-Stat.

"Flash memory card suppliers have been waiting for a volume consumer market to take off," said Jess Huffman, senior analyst at In-Stat, who authored the new MP3 report. "The MP3 'music-mania' is a global phenomenon that has pushed the industry capacity beyond it's current limits. In fact, the excitement of the Diamond Rio success in the U.S. has almost masked-over the even hotter audio-frenzy in the offshore markets," noted Huffman, referring to the portable MP3 digital player from Diamond Multimedia Systems Inc. in Santa Clara, Calif.

Huffman predicted that South Korean suppliers will export 300,000 MP3 players in 1999--far short of their 2 million unit goal because of shortages of flash memory, microcontrollers and other components. "Just about the time suppliers were setting their targets for MP3, demand for flash memory began exceeding supply in other applications," he said.

The first wave of Korean MP3 product shipments will go to Japan and then the Americas, said the In-Stat study. Japan will consume 60% of the Korean exports, predicted the market researcher.

In-Stat's MP3 report, "Flash Memory, Facing the Music," sells for $995.

JEIDA Raises FY99 PC Shipment Forecast in Japan to Over 9 Million
November 10, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Domestic shipments of personal computers totaled 2.359 million units in the second quarter (July-September) of fiscal 1999, up 31 percent from a year ago, the Japan Electronic Industry Development Association (JEIDA) announced Nov. 9.

It was the third consecutive quarter for the figure to be above 2 million and puts cumulative shipments for the first half at a record 4.391 million units, up 34 percent year on year. With shipments running so strong, JEIDA has upped its estimate for the full year to over 9 million units, or 19 percent growth, from the initial forecast of over 8 million units.

The value of second-quarter shipments was 478.5 billion yen, up 22 percent and the highest figure on record for a second quarter. Shipments in the first half were worth 907.3 billion yen, up 25 percent. But the association forecasts little change in the value of shipments for the year as a whole because unit prices are declining for both desktop and notebook PCs.

In the second quarter, the average shipment price for desktop PCs was 221,000 yen, down from 224,000 yen in the first quarter. The average price for notebooks fell to 186,000 yen, from 199,000 yen. Both averages are the lowest on record. The combined average shipment price was 203,000 yen, down from 211,000 yen. The association sees prices dropping another 5 percent in the latter half of the year to below 200,000 yen.

According to JEIDA, one reason PC shipments in the first half were stronger than expected was because consumer demand continued strong into the current year, thanks partly to the rising number of women buyers. Corporate demand is also bouncing back due to the economic recovery and replacement buying to counter the Year 2000 problem. Shipment volume for the personal consumer market rose around 60 percent, accounting for about 40 percent of overall shipments. Shipments to corporate buyers went up 20 percent.

The JEIDA statistics are based on figures collected from 19 companies. They are. Apple Japan Inc., NEC Corp., Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd., Casio Computer Co., Ltd., Canon Inc., Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd., Sharp Corp., Seiko Epson Corp., Sony Corp., Toshiba Corp., Toshiba Personal Computer System Corp., IBM Japan Ltd., Gateway Japan Inc., Hewlett-Packard Japan Ltd., Hitachi Ltd., PFU Ltd., Fujitsu Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. Together, these companies supply around 90 percent of Japan's PC market. Industry observers say total PC shipments for fiscal 1999 will exceed 10 million units when those by other companies, such as Sotec Co., Ltd. and Dell Computer KK, are included.
