If I understand correctly, Nortel is trying to make Cisco's low-end routers redundant by bringing in the functionality of routing into the Network.........sort of like what McNeely of Sun was trying to do to Intel/Microsoft when he proclaimed "Network is the Platform".

If Nortel opens up their Network technology with API's and allow On-Premise CPE vendors (MSFT, Intel, PBX manufacturers, 3Com, etc.) to route data without having to put the intelligence/functionality hardware into their product platform, would that essentially make Cisco's proprietary routers obsolete in the long-term?

Sort of like offering Centrex features to end-users who want the capability, features, fault-tolerance of Telco grade PBX WITHOUT having to buy, maintain & support their own in-house, proprietary PBX.

Is this their game plan? Kill Cisco's router market in the short-term and IP enable other competing COMMODITY hardware/software vendors so that buying proprietary routers will be a thing of the past?

Opinions will be greatly appreciated so I can understand the significance of this announcement!
