If Nortel opens up their Network technology with API's and allow On-Premise CPE vendors (MSFT, Intel, PBX manufacturers, 3Com, etc.)
to route data without having to put the intelligence/functionality hardware into their product platform, would that essentially make Cisco's
proprietary routers obsolete in the long-term?

Assumes that making routing an application on top of a platform OS (potentially doing other activities) will be able to perform. The issue today is performance on the internet. Will customer want to compromise getting to real time performance for the sake of price. Would you pay $10,000 for a car that only goes 50mph versus paying $15,000 for a car that goes 100mph?
