Tick tock. Tick tock. On and on. The beat of pain. Throbbing till there's nothing else in your mind. It eats your mind. Follow the rythym and leave. Poof. Out of the body. I learned it young. The real tricky part can be getting back into your body. Floating around, tapping it on the shoulder. No admittance. And maybe you don't really want to. And it doesn't make your body stop hurting, or stop the pain from eating you up a little at a time. But you have a little peace. Not total, but something. But you want your body back. You want back in. To feel the sun on your skin. A touch. The cold water of a stream. Even if it all those pleasurable sensations are always mixed with pain.

The morphine dispenser is a neat idea. Her's is set for a drip every 10 minutes and if she clicks too soon she still thinks she is getting a dose. Does away with the highs and lows. But you still gotta wait for a doctor to ok it.
