Those machines are a great advance. The patient can self medicate in advance of having to move around for instance. It relieves the nursing staff of having to prepare injections and administer one huge dose that really whipsaws. Overall I think patients generally use less and run less a risk of addiction.

Generally speaking I think you can imagine the lines that might form at emergency rooms if pain medication was dispensed before a doctor could see a patient. Albeit something like a broken leg should qualify for immediate consideration.

I hope that part of it is behind her now and things are getting a little more manageable for you both. Good wishes for a speedy recovery.
