Interesting approach. That did not work on Cybercash though, so to every rule there is an exception and to every exception there is a rule. Look at AMZN, who'd thought a company that has no chance of showing a profit would behave the way they have. Well, their ride is just about over and I am glad I won't be the one left holding the bag. I think especially with these tech newbies there is a grace period, a time in which they should establish themselves or wither on the vine. I think in the case of Cybercash they had passed that grace period, the market (online transactions) had moved beyond them. People don't mind using their credit cards with SSL. However I think marketing in the ecommerce arena is ripe for the picking. If ecommerce is the wave of the future and not simply a fad, precision marketing to the customers of it will be a HUGE hit. There'll be the 'based on what you've bought, look at these' based on what you've looked at look at these' and then there is the 'we haven't seen you here lately so we thought we'd find you to tell you we now have...' It comes down to the difference between a sales person and an order taker. Anyone can set up an ecommerce order entry system, the big bucks value add is the one who can change that order entry system into an electronic sales person with a huge memory for individual preferences. NETP only needed to reach critical mass, I believe that just happened.
