I have no doubt that Gorbachev was a serious reformer, and that Thatcher's assessment of him as someone with whom one could do business was correct. I also think that he was in power because the Politburo needed him to deal with Reagan, and that he would never have gotten power if Carter and Mondale had dominated the decade. I also think that he was at least as much a Communist as Deng, who was loathe to lose power or territory; that if the Politburo had not trusted him, he would have gotten nowhere; and that events overtook him, and he was man enough to ride them out with some grace....
