Advanced Micro Says It May Break Even in 4th Quarter

Sunnyvale, California, Nov. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Intel Corp.'s biggest rival in the microprocessor market, may break even in the fourth quarter instead of reporting a loss, as analysts expect, Chief Executive Jerry Sanders said.

''We believe our break-even goal is attainable,'' Sanders said at an analyst meeting at the company's Sunnyvale, California, headquarters. ''Our business is terrific.''

Analysts expected a loss of 35 cents a share, according to First Call Corp. Sanders said Advanced Micro will ship at least 5 million microprocessors during the quarter, more than it originally expected, because of strong demand for personal computers. It expects revenue of $800 million.

AMD will ship 1 million of its new Athlon microprocessors this quarter, Sanders said. The company is counting on Athlon to command higher prices than its K6 family of chips and help it return to profitability.

In the year-ago fourth quarter, net income was $22.3 million, or 15 cents a share, on revenue of $788.8 million.

The company's shares rose 1/8 to 23 1/8 in early afternoon trading before being halted on the New York Stock Exchange.
