Telscape International, Inc. Announces Constellation of Teleports Strategy to Provide Internet Services to and from Latin America HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 19, 1999--Telscape International, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSCP - news), an integrated communications company, today announced its strategy to provide Latin America with global connectivity for Internet and data services by means of a ''constellation of teleports'' being implemented by its Silicon Valley based subsidiary, Interlink Communications, Inc.
Salvador Giblas, Interlink's Vice President of Sales, commented: ''The demand for bandwidth is growing at dramatic rates throughout the world and particularly in Latin America, as a result of the Internet, privatization initiatives, government de-regulation and advances in technology. Fueling this growth are the benefits derived from accessing high quality satellite bandwidth and sophisticated satellite solutions. By building a constellation of teleports, we have positioned ourselves to rapidly take advantage of this dramatic, global growth in demand for Internet by both individuals and businesses. We currently have contracts to provide Internet services in Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Paraguay, Colombia and the West Indies.''
In fulfilling this strategy, Interlink, which operates its own world class teleport, recently established agreements with teleports in South America, the United States and England. These agreements facilitate the rapid implementation of new requirements by building upon existing teleport resources and facilities. Further, they dramatically expand the number of satellites that can be accessed and, correspondingly, the available market. Interlink, now has access to the following satellites:
- Solidaridad 2 - Satmex 5 - NSSW 806 - NSSW 803 - Telstar 5 - GE-4 - PanAmSat 1, 3, 5 - Intelsat 325, 805, 705 - Eutelsat
As a result, Interlink is positioned to provide Latin America with voice, video and data services worldwide, but with a particular emphasis on the United States to and from the following teleport locations:
- Sao Paulo, Brazil - San Francisco Bay Area - New York - Buenos Aires, Argentina - Los Angeles - Atlanta - Miami - Denver - London, England
The ability to offer services based in these key locations supports the rapid growth of business since local access to and from these locations no longer has to be long hauled, a requirement that restricted growth opportunities due to high costs. In addition, satellite coverage is extended from the Americas continents all the way to the Indian sub-continent." Manuel Landa, Chairman and COO of Telscape, commented: "This 'constellation of teleports' is an excellent example of how we are moving towards a facilities-based model with a satellite overlay to the fiber optic network we are building in Mexico. Our satellite overlay, coupled with our fiber, provides us with the assets to provide very advanced data and Internet services as well as voice. This swift and global response to the business customer that is demanding today a fast, reliable and economical Internet access will allow us to position our E-Commerce services earlier than most of our terrestrial competitors in those areas where both the long-haul fiber optic and last mile solutions will take several years to happen."
