Hi All. This week was the MST show in Japan. MST = Microcomputer Software & Tools. Kind of like Embedded Systems Conference. See jasa.or.jp for some info (not much in English). My (perhaps opiniated) summary: Place: Tokyo Big Site Dates: November 10, 11, & 12 Attendance: 15,000 (unofficial count) Some exhibitors: Intel, Texas Instruments, Agilent, WindRiver, Microsoft, Integrated Systems, Microware, Hitachi, Toshiba, NEC, Aplix, MetroWerks, etc Overall Opinions: I felt a general trend toward two themes: (1) Embedded Internet from a users' point of view. e.g. A slew of solutions for building User Interfaces (MetroWerks, Access,bSQUARE etc) and (2) Embedded Internet from a connectivity point of view. e.g. Interfaces such as USB, 1394, etc and protocxols such as HAVi and Jini, which allow devices to communicate digitally. On the OS & Embedded Tools front, I felt: * WindRiver's presence was good, with the WindRiver booth as well as booths by their distributors (Innotech, Kobelco, Nissin). Integrated Systems had a huge booth Microware's booth was generating alot of excitement, mostly by doing slick demos and presentations MicroSoft's booth was loud (music and graphics) but confusing (WinCE vs NTe) Rumour of the day (Nov 10) WinCE 3.0 would be royalty free Rumour of the day (Nov 11) RedHat may be buying Cygnus Rumour of the day (Nov 12) WinCE 3.0 will never ship I didn't see any major "new" products, but points of interest were Insignia's announcement of a NEC design win, and Metrowerks' PowerPak/PowerParts technologies. A common question I kept getting was "What do you think will happen after the Wind/Ints merger?", to which I pointed people in Wind's booth direction and said "Go ask them!". cheers china
