EBAS vs. USIX, Strategy:

From RB: JWtechy 11/12/1999

As a follow-on to my EBAS vs. INIT and FLNK post, and in response to a request on this thread, I am adding this analysis to the collection.

Usi Internetworking is a pioneer in the field. It actually has many similarities to EBAS, from a technology and business model perspective. USIX puts a little more emphasis on Microsoft applications, which dampens its impact in the mission critical arena, but it compensates with a embrace of UNIX and Novel infrastructure.

The largest differences is in the target market. USIX will compete more in the outsourcing arena. It supports heavier weight custom applications and web hosting, much like an EXODUS or a Digital Island. However, it uses the ASP pricing model, so it lays claim to ASP
status. USIX's cost structures are very different, as noted by its large eps losses that accompany its significant revenue gains.

EBAS targets the lower end market place, the key "untapped marketplace" that is projected to be a 22 billion dollar market by 2001. EBAS's customer entry costs would be far less than what USIX would charge.

Both are exceptional companies. EBAS and other up and coming ASPs have benefited from the ASP education dollars that USIX has spent in its efforts to help establish this market.

Any body serious about this business, from an investment standpoint, would do well by owning both. EBAS, obviously has a lot further to go, and so would represent a better appreciation base. But, both should be considered long term core holdings.
