Dig on this story from Jon Scott's thread: Sunday November 14, 8:08 am Eastern Time Air France wants up to 40 pct of Virgin -paper LONDON, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Air France is in talks with Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic [VA.CN] about buying up to 40 percent of the airline and bringing it into its fledgling alliance with America's Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL - news), the Sunday Times reported. Virgin has said it has been in talks with several potential financial partners but has insisted it is not under any pressure to move quickly and is also pursuing other options, such as a flotation of the group. In a battle of Britain's skies, Air France -- one of the most heavily subsidised airlines in the world -- would be up against joint efforts by Dutch airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines NV and Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL - news) of the United States, the paper said. Virgin, which was not available for comment, already cooperates with Continental under a codeshares deal that permits each to sell tickets on the other's flights. However, KLM on Wednesday dismissed as 'premature' media reports that its Wings group was weighing a link with Virgin. If Air France succeeds in buying a Virgin stake, British entrepreneur Branson will be able to fulfil one of his greatest ambitions -- to bring a Concorde to Heathrow airport and compete head on with arch-rival British Airways Plc's (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BAY.L) supersonic carrier, the paper noted. A Virgin spokesman was quoted as saying that Virgin would probably have to enter an alliance 'sooner or later' because regulators appeared unprepared to halt their growth. 'I guess it will be within the next 18 months or so,' he was quoted as saying. -------------------------------------------------------------- Now this stock could rock.
