Mike, I look at the announcement as supportive of the contention that there will be universal adoption of ipg/epg technology, which reflects on the strength of the Tornado which will soon engulf gmst/tvgia. As well, since GI is the stb manufacturer and tvgia is soon to be a part of gmst, it signals a probable settlement of the <larger> digital portion of the gmst/gic lawsuit. I believe the markets will view both events positively next week.

If this comes to pass, we may find ourselves with two confirmed successful Gorilla hunts.

jmho,
uf

Mike,

Is it possible that the excitement is about the statement that TV Guide's EPG is part of the platform to be used? Well, heck! Whose would they use if they didn't use TV Guide's?

This really is not new news since TV Guide has a 10 year exclusive agreement with all of AT&T Broadband. This will also include MediaOne if the T acquisition gets done. The DCT-5000 does not include a native guide. This move (announced in the Spring) was another indication that the IP issues between GIC and Gemstar were favoring the latter.

I posted the same article on Yahoo yesterday morning because many people are simply not aware of this agreement. Armstrong has indicated that he wants to use as many as 10-12 STB vendors. This is where Henry comes in IMO but the bottom line remains the same as all will have Gemstar Inside. There is no barrier to entry greater than long term exclusivity.

Regards
Stew

>>It's old news, so to speak.<<

Mike,

One of the old adages on Wall St. has always been "buy on the rumor, sell on the news." However, of late, it seems that rule has been suspended and replaced with "buy on the news and buy again when the news is rebroadcast" (OK, I just made that quote up and it is not too catchy, but it does seem to be happening.) Was that not the case with QCOM's HDR technology announcement.

Of course you are right, the market should say AT&T is using product from GMST - so what, what else is new. But the way markets have behaved lately, we might be up a dozen points on this<g>.
