Consumer Willingness to Switch Access Providers

What types of access providers would consumers consider switching to? A recent Jupiter Communications Consumer Survey of 2,811 online households asked participants which type of company they would switch to for a reliable, quick connection to the Internet. Fifty-eight percent said they would choose a company other than the one they currently use. Of these households, about 25% indicated that they didn't know which type of company they would switch to. With cable companies heavily promoting high-speed access alternatives, 25% of the respondents said they would switch to a cable access provider. The remaining types of access providers were mentioned by only 12% of the survey participants.

SinceAOL has 20 million customers compared to 2 million for MSN 1million for ATHm and 133000 for AT&T, a random sdample of 2811 on line customers would be overweighted in AOL.

Most AOL customers are on dial-up.
An AOL respondent would not choose to switch to AOL.
An AOL respondent would probably choose to switch to cable because it is faster
A non-AOL respondent may be more likely to be a cable customer and therefore would not switch to AOL because (without widely available broadband) is perceived as slower.)

Of the 58% who said they would switch, 1/2 didn't know to who (or WHY) the rest want cable (Speed).

Not much new info here.
