***Constellation1 will last 10 years, but so what?*** It will be obsolete by then. 9600bps versus 384kbps will NOT be attractive to people in 2009. Even in countries which are NOT a big part of The New Paradigm. The second constellation handsets will be small, fast, efficient and better. Spectacularly better. Cheaper too, since the cost of producing them will be lower. The only thing going for Constellation1 will be cheap minutes and cheap second-hand handsets from people who have upgraded.

A repeat from Loral thread. New clickers might not be aware that Loral/Globalstar threads run together.

10 years is a LONNNGGGGGGGG time in WWeb world. That will be a problem for ICO. They are pleased with their long satellite life, but that won't be of much value to them.

Meanwhile, is there a minutes used graph on the Globalstar Website yet? I better check. Without that information, there is a risk that insider traders would benefit and the SEC might add to government woes [FBI, CIA, SEC all breathing down Globalstar neck] Nobody came up with any reason not to have it. Not a valid one anyway.

***The Globalstar Sales Process Has Started*** Yes, it is morning on 15 November 1999 and today is the start of the Hard Launch following the soft launch which began on Tuesday at Telecom99 a few weeks ago announced by Mr Bernie Schwartz.

So, I read the morning paper from beginning to end, but no advertisements, articles or anything. Since there is no gateway in NZ, that isn't really surprising. But still, it means there is NO hard launch here.

As day breaks around the world, I'll be interested to see the reports come in of full page ads in newspapers, magazines and even ads on TV where Service Providers ARE launching service for real. This is so exciting!

Better rush off to globalstar.com and see the minutes mounting already. There should be some announcement of the official sales process and flashing red lights where handsets are for sale. Opening day specials. Use 100 minutes a month and get any more free!

I'll check it and report back.

I've waited 5 years for this.

Happy Day!!!

Maurice

<< the practice of teams of harvesters going around is more than likely still used, mostly by 'wheat farmers' ...if I am not mistaken. These guys would be a good target market for something like G* ....>>

Metman: These are called "custom combiners"; at least in my neck of the woods. Small to large groups of people with combines and trucks that start up north when the harvest is ready and work southward, as the harvest progresses seasonally, performing combining of crop for those who contract with them. End up in Texas or thereabouts. Still a very active way of getting the crop off the field.

Seems they could use a phone that allowed for continuous and reliable communication while traveling across the nation.
