Until the "look and feel" dance started, everyone was "borrowing" like mad from everyone else. I agree with you that success depends on more than technology--otherwise, Microsoft would not have achieved the position it has today. However, in this particular case, it was one single vision for computing that turned around a company able and willing to exploit it. Xerox PARC developed it; Apple exploited it. Lester Thurow's statement was perfectly accurate and Kemp should have kept his mouth shut.
